Manuel Latruwe - Belgian Patisserie
& Bread Shop

Tuesday, November 18, 2007

It has been a year since my last blog entry. Wow, it is hard to believe it's been so long, yet time stops for no one. In that time, I had a baby girl that is now almost a year, finished a cookbook that currently is being printed and I have been keeping busy with the general chaos of life. However now that the cookbook is all done I have a little more time and I'm aching with happiness to come back to this website and share with you my thoughts on delicious food, healthy eating and and now with a new mom's perspective.

Recently I went for lunch to Manuel Latruwe, a little patisserie here in Calgary, with a group of wonderful friends and our kids.

This little shop has a beautiful display and an inviting feel plus delicious treats. In the display there is a large assortment of delicious petite and grande dessert but few lunch type items. I ordered a ham and cheese croissant, cappuccino, plus a tomato-mozzarella quiche and
a loaf of bread, these last two items I took home. The croissant was exquisite, light, buttery, sweet and one of a kind delicious - not your typical Canadian croissant. Coffee was excellent, and the quiche I reheated at home and enjoyed for dinner. It was amazing; light, full of flavour, and before I knew it I eat it all. The bread as well was very good in typical European fashion; unpretentious, simple but the taste was oh so good, a perfect loaf of bread. I must confess I did steal a few bites of a delectable vanilla cream brulee from a friend, a pure cream perfection that was an exquisite end to our meal.

I must mention that although there are a lot of dessert type items, and a large array of different breads, there are few savory items. Furthermore the staff did not offer to heat my croissant, and didn't tell us about a delicious mushroom soup that also could have been a wonderful lunch food item. I was slightly disappointed however the service industry in Calgary is known to be lacking. Nevertheless this
little patisserie was a delectable treat and a place worth going back to again.
